Tizen OS

As I said in a previous article, trends come and go, and this applies to smartphones and mobile operating systems. If now, in 2013, most users have Android and iOS operating their smartphones, in few years we can expect a new OS to rule them all. Samsung is not sleeping on its popularity, and is working really hard to develop a well thought out operating system that could become an alternative to Android.

The new operating system is called Tizen, and it is based on Linux, just like Android. But, compared to Android, Tizen has a better foundation, since the developers who are working on it learned valuable lessons from the Android experience. The first Tizen smartphones surfaced recently, and their names are Samsung I8805 Redwood and I8800 Melius. Although these names are unofficial, they have appeared in the “about” section of Tizen programmers, according to GSMArena.

Young Hee Lee, vice president of Samsung said that the first official Tizen phone will be released in August or September, and both gadgets will run Tizen OS 2.1, codenamed Magnolia. The two phones are expected to be launched in two waves: first in the United States, then in Europe. Samsung is not the only company that is taking an interest in Tizen Association, the group designed to popularize the new operating system. Other cell phone manufacturers like Huawei and NTT DoCoMo are seeing a real value in this OS, and we could see them adopting it by the end of this year.
